Week One's Blog

Hello everybody!  My name is Jamie Greenfield and I'm a 31 year old army wife and proud mother of two!  I reside on post at Fort Polk in Louisiana and am a psychology major with a minor is sociology.  This class is one of my two FIRST classes at Brandman University!  I already have two AA's and am now working towards my BA.  My career goal is become a licensed therapist! I'm more interested in helping people than specific issues or demographics.  I am more than willing to help children, men, women, drug addicts, alcoholics, etc. That's what matters to me.

Specific aspects of my career path that I would like to research further include how to obtain a license, how long would the license last, how much education do I need to be a doctor, and how hard it is to open up my own practice.  This sounds confusing, but I really want to help people, sure I want to make money at the same time, but my ultimate goal is to make much-needed therapy AFFORDABLE regardless of insurance and research is key!  I know that therapists often recommend at least 52 weeks of therapy, say for a death in the family or divorce, however most insurance companies will only cover 20 weeks, at most!  How does this help anyone?  I want to make it possible for the client to get the help that he or she may need.

Specific areas of information fluency and literacy I hope to improve on include the most efficient way of obtaining information whether it be broad or specific.  I find myself getting way too many hits on an online search or even in a physical library.  I don't know how to narrow down what it is I'm attempting to research and it drives me crazy.  I would also like to know of some good online databases and research tools because as of right now, I only use Yahoo search engine.  One more important one to me is the ethical and legal ways of citing something.  I know what "to plagiarize" means but what about photographs, drawings, etc. stuff like that, that are available to the public via the internet?  I would just like to get that right out of the way so that I know from here on out, how to avoid plagiarizing and mishandling content off the web.

Jamie,

Welcome to Brandman University. Although I am just a few classes in myself, I can tell you that you made a great choice in coming to this University. It's fast-paced, but so is being a mom of two and a military wife!

I think that your topic to research is great. I didn't know that the recommendation on therapy is 52 weeks and that insurance only covers 20 weeks. That could leave someone with a huge financial burden who is already in need of help to get themselves on the right track. From my understanding, in order to prescribe medication, you would need to also go through med school which is another 4 years. I think it's great you want to open your own practice in order to provide more cost-efficient therapy. Would you be looking to provide to military families or a private practice outside of the military? It sounds like you have some great ideas that will really help those in need in dealing with the troubles life can bring.

Hi Preston,

I wish to be a therapist/psychologist, not a psychiatrist. I do believe that some people are in need of medication, however I'm looking to help people through CBT etc. I am not a pill pusher, I think most issues can be worked out by acknowledging them and then working through them. Also, the practice would be off post but open to all...Thanks for the feedback;) I will try and search for you...
